- "Eine Hardware, eine Software oder ein zusammengesetztes Element auf jeder Ebene einer Systemhierarchie bestimmt für Konfigurationsmanagement. (Das System und jedes seiner Elemente sind einzelne Konfigurationselemente.) Konfigurationselemente haben vier gemeinsame Eigenschaften:
- Definierte Funktionalität,
- Ersetzbar als eine Einheit,
- Eindeutige Spezifikation,
- Formelle Steuerung von Passform, Verwendbarkeit und Funktion." [1]
